A Guide to Choosing the Right Wireless System for your Primary School

Wireless networks are now widely used across many industries and are becoming more advanced by the week. Most of us will come into contact with wireless technology every day without realising it. In the education sector wireless can deliver real educational benefits, promoting greater flexibility in teaching, enabling mobile learning and encouraging better pupil engagement.

But choosing a wireless system can be a daunting task with a wide range of different systems and equipment all claiming to offer different features and benefits. The attached guide aims to explain how wireless systems work and some of the pitfalls to look out for, the different types of system available and how to make the right choice for your school.

What Ports Do I need to have Unblocked to Allow Meraki Devices to Communicate with the Cloud Controller?

Meraki Cloud Controller

The Meraki Cloud Controller architecture eliminates the need for a dedicated hardware controller on-site for a wireless infrastructure. However, the access points need to be able to access the Meraki Cloud services on the internet through a range of ports and addresses. If your firewall blocks these, you may need to make configuration changes to unblock the necessary ports and addresses. These are shown in the attached spreadsheet.

Note: If access to these ports or addresses is blocked, configuration updates or changes may be impossible. In addition, new clients may be unable to authenticate or use wireless services or any other services provided by your Meraki infrastructure.
